Drain Backup Mitigation: Immediate Cleanup for a Residential Garage in Springfield, MO

Dan and Tina Benton

ABC Environmental Contracting Services in Springfield, we know how frustrating it is to find water where it doesn’t belong. This was a case recently with a Springfield homeowner when they discovered water pooling in their garage. The water appeared to be coming from a floor grate, and they weren’t sure what the exact source was. That’s when our team stepped in with professional water mitigation in Springfield, MO.

The Cause of the Damage: A Sudden Drain Backup

When a drain suddenly backed up, it affected the drywall, insulation, and floor tiles in the garage. Our team quickly got to work to assess the problem and restore this homeowner's space along with their personal belongings.

How We Handled This Water Mitigation Project

From initial to final inspection, check out how we tackled this mess from a drain backup:

Initial Assessment

The first thing we did was inspect the garage to understand how much damage this drain backup had caused. Using moisture meters, we identified the areas that had been affected, including the drywall, insulation, and flooring. We noticed that a lot of the materials had been waterlogged due to previous exposure to water.

Water Mitigation Process

Our team took the next steps immediately:

  • Setting Up Containment: Before beginning any demo or drying work, we set up a containment barrier around the affected area. This involved using plastic sheeting and sealing off the workspace to prevent dust particles from spreading to other parts of the house.
  • Tile Tear-Out and Demo Work: We carefully performed tile tear-out work. Using specialized tools, we removed the damaged tiles and underlying adhesive, leaving the concrete subfloor clean and prepared for future replacement so that there was no lingering moisture beneath.
  • Setting Up Drying Equipment: After removing the water, we set up industrial fans and dehumidifiers to dry out the space. This step was necessary in order to reduce moisture levels in the walls and flooring. We monitored the drying process closely, checking moisture levels daily to ensure everything dried thoroughly.
  • Removing Damaged Materials: The insulation in the walls was soaked and had to be removed. Keeping the structure of the walls intact, we carefully tore out the insulation to prevent mold growth and properly disposed of it.
  • Cleaning and Sanitizing: We sprayed antimicrobial solutions on the floor and exposed wall studs to kill any potential bacteria or mold. With this step, we made sure that the space was safe for the homeowner moving forward. Next, we also power-washed the garage floor to remove any debris and lingering contaminants.
  • Final Inspection: Once the garage was completely dry and sanitized, we did one final inspection to confirm the garage was safe and all contaminants were gone. We also discussed preventative measures with the homeowner to help them avoid future drain backups.

Clean Garage, Happy Homeowner

By the time we finished, the garage was clean, dry, and safe. The homeowner was relieved to have the issue resolved quickly and professionally. They were especially grateful for the extra steps we took to ensure their home was protected from future problems.
