Learn More About History Museum On The Square

The History Museum on the Square is situated at Park Central Square in Springfield, Missouri. The historical center is committed to restoring the past by displaying the local area’s history through permanent galleries and temporary exhibitions.

The museum’s six permanent galleries educate the public on significant events in Springfield’s history. The galleries contain a vast collection of artifacts and photographs combined with innovative technology to create distinct and intentional “voices of history.”

These fixed galleries include pioneers and founders at the crossroads, the birthplace of Route 66, Wild Bill Hickok & The American West, native crossroads at the spring, and The Civil War in Springfield. There is also a children’s educational area showing the transportation history of Springfield, including trains and trolleys.

The History Museum on the Square seeks to provide local students and community groups an opportunity to experience the history of the Greene County by running educational trunk shows. The shows are presented in a “show and tell” format using hands-on artifacts and reproductions, primary source material, and other learning aids. Schools and community groups can book various different trunk shows, including Osage Culture, Lewis & Clark, and Civil War shows.

In addition to the trunk shows, the museum holds ‘Field Trip Fridays’ for local elementary students. This consists of a history program and gallery tour with a rotating program topic and is free of charge. The museum also holds various other exciting exhibits and presentations, which you can learn more about on the website.

The museum is open Wednesday to Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm, and Sunday from 1 pm to 5 pm. Admission costs $16 for adults, $13 for seniors, students, and the military. For children over three years, entry is $10, and for those under three years, admission is free of charge.
