Learn More About Springfield Art Museum

Springfield Art Museum is Springfield’s oldest cultural institution in Springfield, MO, which displays both American & global artwork. The museum began in 1928 when a small women’s art study club started collecting items. Today, the museum contains 10,000 pieces of art in its permanent galleries.

As well as American art from the 18th century onward, the galleries feature many special collections. These comprise of American water media, Midwest artwork, printmaking, and more. The expensive reserve also includes textiles, pottery, and ceramics from Europe and Asia, from various eras and cultures.

The sights of this art museum are not limited to inside the building. On the grounds of the museum is a sculpture garden full of large-scale sculptures. Some of the highlights are the well-known and much-loved Springfield landmark, Sun Target II by John Henry. The garden also features work from other famous artists such as Richard Hunt, Ernest Trova, and James Sterritt.

Springfield Art Museum regularly rotates temporary exhibitions aside from the permanent collections, usually showcasing two or three at a time. There are also many classes and workshops for the public to join. These include art or drawing classes for beginners, acrylic painting, clay and sculpture techniques, porcelain and ceramic jewelry, and many more.

The art museum also offers programs to local schools, such as field trips and tours. Moreover, there are adult events like collection conversations and slow viewing nights. There is also a family art lab, suitable for all ages. The museum’s mission is to invite the community to connect with themselves, each other, and the world through active art engagement.

Springfield Art Museum is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 am to 6 pm, Sunday from 1 to 5 pm, and is closed on Monday. Admission is free for all, but donations are accepted.
